How do I request an evaluation for my child?

ask an advocate initial evaluation Apr 07, 2024

Here are the steps to request an evaluation for your child to determine if they qualify for special education services:

  1. Put your request in writing. Send a letter or email to your child's school principal or special education director requesting a comprehensive evaluation for special education eligibility.
  2. Be specific about your concerns. Describe the academic, behavioral, or other issues you've noticed that make you think your child may need special education services.
  3. Provide consent for the evaluation in your written request. This allows the school to begin the process.
  4. Include any relevant documentation, like doctor's reports or previous assessments, to support your request.
  5. Keep a copy of your written request and note the date you submitted it.
  6. Follow up with the school if you don't hear back within 5-10 school days.

The school must respond to your request within a certain timeframe, typically 15 school days, to either agree to evaluate or explain why they are denying the request. If approved, the evaluation must be completed within 45 school days in most cases.

You have the right to request an evaluation at any time. If you need guidance on the process, consider joining the free "Ask an Advocate" webinar offered at Advocacy Unlocked. We also provide free consultations that can help you request an evaluation for your child.
