The Purpose of the IEP
Mar 28, 2024As parents, we want our children to thrive in all areas of life, not just academics. When disabilities impact development, addressing only academics falls short. That's why the power of the IEP is it's whole-child focus.
Your child's IEP will include goals for key subjects like reading, writing, and math. But it goes much deeper than content knowledge. The program must also identify and provide for needs in areas like:
- Social skills and peer interactions
- Emotional regulation and mental health
- Communication abilities across settings
- Fine and gross motor skills impacting mobility
- Behavior that interferes with classroom learning
- Self-help skills for independence and participation
The purpose of the IEP is: Your child's dignity, talents, and ability to meaningfully access their education The IEP should address every area of your child’s learning needs.
