If you’re considering an evaluation for your child to determine eligibility for special education services, it’s helpful to know what to expect during the process. Here’s a breakdown of the steps involved.

Initial Request

The evaluation process typically begins when you or the school requests an evaluation in writing. Once you submit your request, the school must respond within a specific timeframe, usually 15 school days. Check your state regulations for timelines.

Consent

Before any evaluations can take place, the school needs your written consent. If you request an initial evaluation, state that you give your consent when you request the evaluation. Otherwise, the school or school district will provide you with forms to sign, giving permission for the evaluation to proceed.

Evaluation Plan

After obtaining your consent, the school will create an evaluation plan. This plan outlines the areas they will assess and the types of tests they will use. You should have the opportunity to provide input on this plan.

Comprehensive Assessment

The evaluation will cover all areas related to the suspected disability. This includes:

  • Academic Performance: Assessing how your child performs in subjects like reading, math, and writing.
  • Cognitive Abilities: Evaluating thinking skills, problem-solving, and learning styles.
  • Social/Emotional/Behavioral Functioning**: Understanding how your child interacts with others and manages emotions.
  • Physical Abilities: Checking for any physical challenges that may affect learning.
  • Communication Skills: Assessing how well your child understands and uses language.
  • Other Areas: Other assessments can - and should - be included. Some examples include sensory assessments, visual processing and acuity assessments, functional behavior analyses, assessments for specific learning disabilities… the list is long!

Multiple Methods

The school will use a variety of tools to gather information about your child, including:

  • Standardized Tests: These provide objective data on your child's abilities.
  • Classroom Observations: Educators will observe your child in a classroom setting.
  • Parent and Teacher Questionnaires: Input from parents and teachers helps provide a complete picture of your child's needs.
  • Review of School Records: The school will look at your child's academic history and previous assessments.
  • Medical Information: If relevant, any medical reports may be considered.

Timeline

By law, the evaluation must be completed within 60 calendar days of receiving your consent. However, many states have shorter timelines, so it’s good to check your local regulations.

Evaluation Report

Once the evaluation is complete, you will receive a written report summarizing the results and recommendations. This report is important for understanding your child's needs.

Eligibility Meeting

The school will schedule a meeting to discuss the evaluation results and determine if your child qualifies for special education services. You will be invited to participate in this meeting, and your input is valuable.
