Advocating for FAPE

fape Apr 14, 2024

As a parent or caregiver of a child with a disability, you should understand the importance of FAPE and advocate for your child’s right to an education that meets their needs. By collaborating with educators and the school district, your child has a greater chance of receiving the specialized instruction, related supports, and related services they require.

Advocacy begins by actively participating in the development and review of your child's Individualized Education Program (IEP), the document that outlines their educational goals and the support they will receive. By actively engaging in the IEP process, you can contribute your insight and create a plan that aligns with your child's needs and aspirations.

Advocacy, however, continues after the IEP is drafted. Parents should monitor the IEP implementation and their child’s educational and functional progress. Additionally, stay informed about your child's rights and the services available by connecting with a local community. Familiarize yourself with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and connect with local organizations and support groups to access guidance and resources that can assist you in advocating for your child. Advocacy Unlocked is new, and developing checklists and guides for you!

By proactively advocating for your child's rights and participating in their education, you can help secure a FAPE and create a positive impact on your child’s learning.
