The Importance of FAPE for Children with Disabilities

Historically, though, school districts did not meet that expectation for children with disabilities. In the past, a child with a disability might not have been allowed to attend their local public school. In the more recent past, it was acceptable for a child to simply attend school… learning was not expected or required by the state or federal government.
Now, thankfully, we have grown as a society and recognize that all children should have an education that benefits them. In special education, that is called a FAPE - a free, appropriate public education.For children with disabilities, a FAPE is the expectation of every parent. A FAPE provides the basis for your child’s academic and personal growth. FAPE recognizes that children with disabilities require individualized attention and support to thrive in an educational setting.
Specialized Instruction, Related Supports, and Related Services
FAPE is more than access to a school or an education. It includes the specialized instruction, related supports, and related services matched to each child's unique needs so that the child can benefit from their education.
By providing specialized instruction, children receive targeted teaching methods that meet their learning needs and abilities. This includes teaching methods, as well as curriculum that is evidence-based. Evidence-based curriculum have been tested and shown to be effective at helping children learn.
Related supports are essential components of FAPE. These encompass a wide range of resources and accommodations that remove barriers to learning and enable children with disabilities to fully participate in the educational environment. Examples of related supports may include assistive technology, individualized accommodations, and modifications to the classroom environment.
In conjunction with specialized instruction and related supports, FAPE requires related services to be identified and provided to children with disabilities. These services might include, for example, speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, and transportation assistance, among others. They address the unique needs and challenges of each disability and enable them to access the curriculum effectively.
Together, these components of FAPE create an inclusive environment for children with disabilities. When children receive the specialized instruction, related supports, and related services they require, they are better equipped to overcome obstacles and gain meaningful benefits from their education.
